Decimal and binary prefixes
Drive manufacturers and network rates typically use decimal SI prefixes: each step is 1,000. Operating systems and memory-related contexts may use binary IEC units: each step is 1,024.
1 KB = 1,000 bytes
1 KiB = 1,024 bytes
1 byte = 8 bits
1 KiB = 1,024 bytes
1 byte = 8 bits
The converter normalizes the input to bits and then divides by the exact factor for the selected output unit. It does not silently treat MB and MiB as interchangeable.
